Andrew; The Outlier
Andrew is a liveaboard sailor in the Pacific North West (PNW), father and co-parent to his two sons. He works in an ICU department and after a few short years a gained a deeper appreciation for life and how quickly life can change. Living on the boat and living a minimalist life style allows his to enjoy the things that makes him happy; sailing, hunting and giving experiences to his two sons. Andrew has lived most of his life on Vancouver Island and spent many childhood memories on the coastal waters. He has always felt a sense of being an outlier and never quite fitting in; he always has felt he has done things either against the grain or outside of it, only in his mid-adult life has he gained an appreciation and acceptance of this difference: an outlier. As Andrew had kids of his own he yearned to return to those memories and share them while embracing a completely new community, the sailing community. Andrew has dreams of eventually cutting the dock lines permanently and traveling the PNW on his Westsail 42: S/V SpiritWind
And of course⦠all things pirate!
The Boat
S/V SpiritWind is a 1979 Cutter Ketch Rigged Westsail 42. She is a heavy displacement, double ender, modified full keel boat at 34000lbs. She can store 300gal of fuel and 300gal of water with a 65hp Perkins. SpiritWind is insulated in all the living spaces with 1/4inch foam with a diesel furnace for heat in the winter time. She was originally sailed up from California after being built and is known to have circumnavigated Vancouver Island at least once. She is an easy boat to sail and can fly up to 5 sails at once in light airs with exceptional performance for such a heavy boat in her class. She is hand laid thick fiberglass construction before the OPEX crisis and very seaworthy; definitely a boat for the PNW!
